They had three reasons, basically [why the founders wanted to have guns and hold militias]: One was to kill indians (because they were expanding over the west — they were invading what they called vacant lands, indian country — it was one of the main reasons for the Revolution … so you needed to kill the indians, later you would need militias to do it); You had to control the slaves (it was a slave society — almost all of the founders were slave owners, there were slave rebellions all over the Carribean, they were very frightening, so you needed guns); the third was “The British are Coming”
